"Cantina collision", Wandering notes, Pierre Cléquin, january 2006,

… Three hours walking (or is it three days…?) in the dust and the ochre pebbles, since a long time welcomed and surrounded by the open arms of the motionless agavian folk… With each step, each moment, the difference between close and distant vanishes. The living dilutes, reality is stacked and staged into lights’ strata. The landscape seems to flow slowly from inside the grey-blue thick but flat line of the sierra which cuts the horizon. I don’t know if my eyes are open or closed. No more sun, I’m the core of the sun. It’s not thirst that sticks my tongue to my palate, it’s the ancestral obviousness that here, nothing can be said. That in this original place there never was room for words or any kind of thoughts.
My feet, henceforth useless, have taken root in the desert’s fundament. I move forward through the strength of my eyes. I focus my look on a flickering line appeared in the absent bark of a dead tree, as tenuous, intense and concentrated as a Hendrix’s riff. The trunk moves towards me, grows up, overruns the 360° of the real. Inside, my conscience blows up in a slow motion, multiplies into myriads of threads, born by the wind, that the Indian sitting by me snatches with his fingers to weave childish patterns.
Then cursing in my arms, for the one and thousandth time, Carlos and Malcolm brought together, I find the strength to pour myself another mezcal, and I continue my coloured trip…

Shortly after my return from Mexico, a friend gave me this text, written many years after his own visit there.
I founded there the dust of Western movies, covering like a second skin, and I immediately juxtapose with it the cerebral rumble of Pacific Ocean, heady and invigorating. Collision of « The wave » and the desert, so close in this magical place.
These paintings are part of the series « des rencontres » (some encounters), achieved on my way back from Baja California, Mexico.
